Broadcaster - Channel 4 - http://www.channel4.com/
Related Tv Channel - Film4 - www.channel4.com/film
The technology involved is broadband connection, which is fast enough to load the images and videos as opposed to dial-up. It is a replacement for Tv magazines as it provides all the film times, as well as news, articles and entertainment linked to film, that you would usually find in a Tv magazine. It is a good replacement for the magazine for the following reasons: it is much faster and can be accessed from home, it is free (excluding the cost of broadband), it provides other kinds of media that cannot be accessed through magazines such as video and audio and it is much easier to navigate to exactly what you want to find out about.
The main image on the website is advertising 'In Bruges' which is a thriller out later in the week, it has a link to a review of the film, an interview with the director and the trailer. The other, smaller features are an image from 'Happy-Go-Lucky,' a comedy, recently out in cinemas with a a link to a review, trailer and interviews. There is a preview for a horror film festival and a image from the film 'Changing Lanes,' an action film on Film4 later in the week with a link to a clip from the film.
There is a weekly downloadable film, a movie quiz, ratings for the current films in the cinema, Tv listings for the day and a list of links to blogs, such as 'Mike Myers comedy upsets Hindus' and 'No solace for Bond in Bolivia' which refer to recent news linked to film.
The website manages to appeal to a very wide audience, as it uses a wide range of different film genres on its home page with a thriller, action, comedy, horror and action-thriller all featuring. There is also a search engine which allows the audience to explore past news and reviews from films and more niche genres, which widens the number of people the website can appeal to. The films that seem to dominate the home page appeal to an older audience, this is probably because Film4 trys to appeal to more hardcore film-fans. The preview of the horror film festival will appeal to hardcore horror film-fans and the cinema film ratings will appeal to film-fans in general that dont have a specific genre preference. The website offers a first look at new films out in the cinema, or films still not released as well as a chance to download classic films which gives the experience of being ahead of the crowd and up-to-date as well as having a quick, unpredictable source for classic films, so they never know what they'll get next. The website is advertisement for the channel but it also gives reviews on films in the cinema which could potentially benefit them.
This website is a good example of personalisation, as it allows the audience to navigate around it in a non-linear fashion, and can search for niche genres and films depending on what they like. There is also available film downloads and links to podcasts and games, which allows the audience to get different kinds of pleasure out of the website.
