Swapshop - http://www.swapshop.co.uk/
Swapshop allows people to make thier own account where they can swap thier own items for Swapshop points. The points they make can then be exchanged for other items listed on the website. The technologies involved are broadband connection, internet and images. Broadband connection is fast enough to allow the website to load, internet allows the users to contact each other and to make bids on the items and the images are uploaded by the sellers to show the product they are selling. There is also a competition to win an iPod Touch.
You need to be over 18 to register with swapshop so the audience will mainly be adults. Despite this age restriction, it is still easy to register under 18. The audience would be people with not a lot of free time, maybe in school or working. Swapshop is ideal for them as they do not have to worry about going shopping or collecting things as they are all sent to thier home. The website would also appeal to university students as it is a way to buy things without having any money. The main items sold on swapshop are DVDs, CDs, books and games so the audience tends to be fans and collectors of film, music, literature and games. The benifit of swapshop over other websites like ebay, is that a credit card is not needed to purchase items, all items are exchanged for points, which can then be used to purchase other items.
Proliferation - Due to everyone over 18, living in the UK, being able to register with Swapshop, the site is rapidly growing and there is therefore more choice of items to purchase.
Immediacy - Most people in the UK have broadband and so the speed of the website is much faster then with dial-up connection.
Personalisation - Each member has thier own profile which they can customise and personalise.
Time-Shift - The audience can access the internet whenever they want and so the website can be accessed whenever they want.
Online Surveillance - The website recommends other items you may like to purchase depending on things you have already bought. It also tells you when items you have on your 'Wish List' become available.

9) Just Released or About to be Release New Media Technology
Blu-ray discs
Blu-ray discs are a new type of disc, created by Sony, enabling recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video. Blu-ray discs will eventually replace the dvd as it has much better picture quality and can store much more data. The main competition for Blu-ray discs was HD DVDs, but they recently won selling rights of all DVDs. The DVD use red lasers to read and write data, whereas Blu-ray uses a blue-violet laser. They have a shorter wavelength than the red laser, so it can be more precise. This allows a larger amount of data to be stored in the same amount of space as a DVD. The Blu-ray disc is more appealing to the audience because they have better picture and sound quality than the traditional DVD. Blu-ray discs would appeal to hardcore film fans, who would happily spend a bit more, in order to improve their viewing experience.
Disney, Fox, Warner, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM have all agreed to release their movies exclusively in Blu-ray format. The Playstation 3 comes with an integrated Blu-ray player, which will allow Sony to sell their Blu-ray discs to PS3 owners.
The Key concepts for Blu-ray discs are: Miniaturisation, Quality and Vertical Integration.

The Key concepts for Blu-ray discs are: Miniaturisation, Quality and Vertical Integration.
- Miniaturisation - More data can be stored on Blu-ray disc than a DVD, this eliminates the need for bonus discs or multiple discs per film.
- Quality - The quality of the picture and the sound is much greater and is in higher definition.
- Vertical Integration - Sony can now sell its Blu-ray discs to Playstation 3 owners, who do not need to buy a seperate Blu-ray disc player.
8) Converged Portable Digital Technology
The iPhone
The iPhone is a combination of a mobile phone, an iPod and an internet communications device. It has a 2 megapixel camera with video, music storage, internet and email, touch screen, bluetooth and mobile phone. It has relevance to the current market as people were awaiting the iPhone for a long time, however, as it took so long to bring out a technology that combined internet, music and mobile phone, it isn't as good as it could have been, with not a lot of memory, and it is unable to send picture messages.
The iPhone is aimed at people, eager to keep up with the current technologies as well as loyal Apple customers, owning iPods, Macs etc. The main benefit of the iPhone is the portability. All the technologies are combined to fit into your pocket. The iPhone also looks professional and would appeal to businessmen and women.
The different institutions involved are obviously Apple and its products such as iTunes, which allows the iPhone to combine internet and iTunes, so there is no longer the need to download music on your computer and then putting it onto the iPod. O2 has priority to sell phone contracts for the iPhone in the UK.
The key theories involved are Portability, Miniaturisation, Personalisation, Time-shift, Convergence and Vertical Intergration.
Portability & Miniaturisation - These are both linked, as due to minurisation of the technology, it has become more portable and can fit in your pocket.
Personalisation - The user can add thier own music and videos and customise thier playlists and iTunes library etc.
Time-shift - The audience can chose when and where to watch thier videos and listen to music. They can also download podcasts which can be listened to at any time.
Convergence - The iPhone combines a mobile phone, iPod, camera, photo, video and music storage as well as internet and email.
Vertical Intergration - The iPhone works together with other Apple products such as iTunes, so the user can purcase songs for thier iPhone from the iTunes store.

7) Leisure Time Activity
Amazon is a website where you can buy and sell products. It is replacing normal shopping as you can do it all from home. The website is beneficial for the audience becuase they get a good image and description of what they are going to buy, they do not have to pay in cash, as it is all done by credit or debit card, they do not have to leave thier computer and it is easy to find exactly what they want, as it is broken down into different departments. You can browse by brand and all the bargain products. Your recent orders are all tracked, which allows amazon to recommend other products you might like. You can also purchase digital downloads such as mp3s, TV shows and films. This combines websites such as ebay with iTunes.
The key concepts which work on Amazon are: Immediacy, Proliferation and Reach.
Immediacy - The products can be bought and sold over the internet, with no need to go to a store.
Proliferation - There is a large number of products for the buyer to look through, they can browse by genre and brand of music and products.
Reach - Amazon is always increasing in size, so there is more chance to appeal to a wider range of people. And due to the internet itself, millions of people can browse at the same time
6) Independent or Fan Website
http://www.ckyalliance.com/
Ckyalliance is a website run by the band CKY and thier fans. The website is famous for being one of the first interactive websites between the band and the members. There is a section called 'AskCKY,' where the members can ask the band questions and the band answer them personally. The band posts thier own news and all members are avaiable to upload band photos. The website also offers exclusive live tracks and videos to the members of the site. Cky is quite an underground band, so the website itself is offering something to the niche audience that they couldn't get before. The primary audience of this website would be the fans of CKY, they tend to be over 18, American men and women, as CKY prefer to play in bars where they live. Although, due to the brother of the drummer, Jackass's Bam Margera, the band has become much wider known, thanks to Bam using CKY's music in all his skate videos. The fanbase has expanded to under 18s, and people living outside the US, where the music wasn't available before. There are 22958 members of the CKY Alliance, and growing, so the reach of the website is increasing.
